Wales 2004

WALES TRIP TO TOMMYS FARM

The archways camping trip is coming up and the spaces are limited.
The trip will be in mid Wales in Tommy's farm in Rhayader.
We go down in the mini bus and it takes about 6 hours.
We have over 100 people come here a week.
We can only take 3 groups of around 10 with us.
Each group will go away for 4 days the cost of this trip will be £75.

There are lots of activities not just riding, there is walking, wood collecting, cooking, washing up, arguing, sun bathing and running from the rain.

The project supplies all the camping equipment apart from knife, fork, spoon, bowl, plate cup and sleeping bag.
If the weather is bad we also spend some time away from camp and do things like go swimming.

You have to deserve to go, if you are good at making tea you will probably be going.

THE DATES ARE:

Monday 2nd -Thursday 5th August
Monday 9th - Thursday 12th August
Monday 16th - Thursday 19th August

My experience of Wales 2003
We all met up at the project early and got ready to set of on a long journey to Wales.
Getting up there was a laugh we got there about midday.
We got our bags sorted out and got ready to ride.
We were wet and cold and dirty but we still went riding and had fun.
Neil made some dodgy food but it was eatable the best meal was the barbecue.
I wanted to stay longer but in a way I was glad I come back as we all stunk.
Really looking forward to this year.

Youth Endurance Challenge

Dover 2004

The teams have been picked, the bikes prepared it is now the day of the race. It is an early start for all as this youth endurance is being held at Dover Moto-X Challenge.

We all meet at Archway for about 8am and quickly loaded up the two trailers and mini buses; we're off on the road. The journey down to Dover went smoothly until we arrived at the ferry port and realised that we we're slightly lost. We did after some driving around find our way and arrived a little bit late.

As soon as we arrived we unloaded the bikes, registered the teams and got ready for the start. The race was to run for three hours and in that time each team had to complete 70 laps of the circuit, as well as a mechanical test which involved removing and refitting certain parts of a motorbike and finally a trails section. This was not going to be easy.

I marshalled from the start of the race and had a fantastic view point to watch the race from. First round from Archway was the D-Teasers team; next WTF and finally NO-Fear all made it round the hectic first lap with no problems. For the next few hours the bikes kept coming and the riders kept changing as each team tried to reach their target of 70 laps. From my marshalling point there were some falls but nothing major.

Around mid afternoon I was relived of my marshalling duties and went back to the pits, grabbed a bite to eat and checked how our teams were getting on. The D-teasers had completed the trails section, WTF were in the queue waiting to try the trails section and NO-Fear had lots of fear but still completed the daunting trials section.

By the end of the day our teams had done as many laps as possible, they all tried the trails section, all that was left was the mechanical test which all completed.

We all thought this was the end. It wasn't! There was a special timed test where each team member had to complete one full lap with the overall fastest team time scoring the most points. Phew that's it…

Trophy Time
Everyone gathered around to find how they had done and you could hear the whispers and sense the expectation. The overall winner was Docklands KG5, Runners up went to Dover Moto-X challenge and third place went to D-Teasers from Archway. Excellent we got a trophy. It was great to see the guys up there on the podium.

More Trophies
With the overall standings done it was time for best mechanical test. First place went to No-Fear form Archway and runners up were D-Teasers again from Archway. Cool now we have three trophies. Well-done guys.

Even More Trophies
All that was left now was the trails section and to be honest I can't remember who won that because no one from Archway won. But there is an award for overcoming adversity and this would be the final Trophy to be given out. And the award goes to No-Fear from Archway. Yes even more trophies for Archway.

Well it was the end of the day now and we had bagged four trophies had a fantastic day out, as did all the other teams there. We swiftly packed up and headed back to London happy, proud and bloody knackered. Although everyone soon perked up enough to wave their trophies at other teams as we passed them by.

Motor Projects Job Fair

The Archway Project in Thamesmead, South East London was created in 1982 as a voluntary organisation to work with young people. It has now grown to become a successful and busy independent youth project. The Archway Project works with teenagers from across the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley and specifically targets those most disaffected. This would include young people in care, those excluded from school and young people involved in the Youth Justice system.

The majority of our work is based around motor cycles, we repair and recycle damaged motor cycles, we maintain motor cycles and we ride our bikes on legal off-road tracks around the country. The young people who attend our project learn how to maintain the bikes, they learn how to ride motor bikes (we have fully qualified instructors) and they get to take part in nationwide competitions both as teams and individually. The motor cycles are used as a medium to engage young people and direct their enthusiasm.

On Saturday 10th July between 10.00 am - 4.00 pm the Archway Project is hosting an Open Day for people who may be interested in a career in Motor Projects.
There will be several motor projects in attendance from East & South East London.
Projects are always looking out for new people who are interested in working with young
people and motor vehicles.

TV Soaps get real on The Community Channel

Press Release

Who says Soaps aren't good for you? Presenter, Fiona Phillips sets out in a new TV series, Soap Life, to prove that the nations' favourite viewing has a more positive influence on us than we'd imagine. This new talk show, being screened on The Community Channel, takes on the big social issues that TV soaps bring to life and helps viewers understand how they can turn angst into action with charities and volunteers showing the way.

TV soaps regularly draw weekly audiences in excess of 50 million and dominate digital and terrestrial airwaves. Even the Archbishop of Canterbury has recognised their importance, recently urging members of the clergy to watch soaps to help them connect with the real world. (see note) The Community Channel's new 5-part talk-show, Soap Life, recognises this potential and helps viewers to turn their viewing of soaps into a more meaningful experience.

Subjects as intimate, difficult and diverse as sexual orientation, organ donation, pre-marital depression and bereavement all come under the spotlight. Soap stars including Chris Finch (Karl Foster from Coronation Street), Ameet Chana (Adi Ferreira from EastEnders), Nicola Wheeler (Nicola Blackstock from Emmerdale) and Carryl Thomas (Kelly Boulter from Family Affairs) are joined on the sofa by experts, counsellors and members of the public to talk about their real-life and "soap-life" experiences of preparing for and dealing with these life traumas.

In keeping with the central ethos of The Community Channel to "inspire people to get involved with their communities and do more with their lives", Soap Life draws upon the expertise of specialist charities and voluntary organisations to show viewers where to go for advice and support, or to how to help others by volunteering with charities that provide support in real-life situations.

Jane Mote, The Community Channel controller says

"Soaps have such a powerful influence on people's lives opening up important and difficult subjects. We wanted to offer more than a phone-line to help viewers explore these issues. Thanks to the co-operation of all the broadcasters and actors we have been able to re-visit plot lines and give them a reality check. The result is thought-provoking and engaging TV that will help viewers with issues that may have affected them deeply.

Presenter Fiona Phillips says:

"This is a fantastic idea and I have loved having more time to talk in-depth about subjects that matter with the actors and charities. The actors have all found it really meaningful and they were surprisingly open about their personal views and experiences."

Soap Life broadcasts on The Community Channel from Monday 28th June. The first show is about Exploring Sexuality with Chris Finch, who plays gay nurse Karl Foster from Corrie, Jenny Broughton from FFLAG (Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and Andy Simms, a Birmingham teacher who discusses coming out.

· The Community Channel broadcasts 24 hours a day on Sky 585 and Telewest 233. It is on ntl channel 14 from 10am to 4pm and has a daily three-hour slot on Freeview 46.
