The Archway Project in Thamesmead, South East London was formed in 1982 as a voluntary organisation to work with young people. It has now grown to become a successful and busy independent youth project. The Archway Project works with teenagers from across the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley and specifically targets those most disaffected by society in general. This would include young people in care, those excluded from school and young people involved in the Youth Justice system.

The majority of our work is based around motorcycles, we repair and recycle damaged motorcycles, we maintain motorcycles and we ride our bikes on legal off-road tracks around the country. The young people who attend our project learn how to maintain the bikes, they learn how to ride motorbikes (we have fully qualified instructors) and they get to take part in nationwide competitions both as teams and individually. The motorcycles are used as a medium to engage young people and direct their enthusiasm.

The Archway Project is a registered charity and is staffed by a mixture of paid an volunteer workers, each of whom is dedicated towards helping our young people reach their full potential. The project is managed by a voluntary 'Management Committee' which consist of representatives from local authorities, police, local community groups and the young peoples representative. Each week between eighty to a hundred young people attend one of the programmes on offer, and over the year the project works with around 250 different young people. The young people not only take part in the activities, they also help to decide how the project is run through direct representation on the management committee.

Our Aims & Objectives

The aim of the project is to improve the physical, mental and spiritual well being of the local young people through the use of constructive physical and educational activities.
